Throwbacks need love, too

I haven't been able to stop listening to "Sail On, Sailor" by the Beach Boys since I first heard it in the Departed (it plays in the scene in the cafe where Costello talks to the priests).  Everyone always talks about Brian Wilson and his progression to his pinnacle of musical genius, and I've been seeing why this is true more and more lately.  According to Wikipedia, Wilson's label had to literally beg him to make this song as he refused to step back into his role as the Beach Boys' frontman.  This is one of the last songs he ever wrote and recorded for them.

Pet Sounds is hands down one of the greatest albums to ever be released, both from a musical influence standpoint and a technical, artistic perspective.  I know it took him over 30 years to write, produce and record Smile, so I think I'm going to download it as soon as I can.
But this song is something I think you will like very much.  Enjoy.

What do you get when you mix one of my all time favorite artists, one of their best songs, one of the best DJs in the history of music and one of the best MCs out there?  A song that is actually so good its insane.

Zero 7 attracts a lot of producers and DJs who come in to remix their songs but this one blows away any of the others that I've ever heard.  MF Doom's lyrics are sincere, Danger Mouse's beat is of course contagious and Sia Furler's voice is still undeniably the sexiest voice in music.  I can't even explain why I like this song so much, just listen to it.  I know you'll enjoy.

... with their new album, Baby 81.  Even though the album doesn't come out until May, I've been hooked up with a copy and its absolutely excellent.  They're coming to Montreal on May 28th and you can expect to find me there.

I don't have much else to say but listen to this song and enjoy.

I don't know why I didn't post this earlier, but the band TV On The Radio are actually really good.  I saw them at the Olympia a few weeks back and I discovered 3 things:
1) They're all black except for the bassist
2) They're from Brooklyn
3) They're really, really good live.

The song "I Was A Lover" is pretty intense.  I've read that Spin magazine called Return To Cookie Mountain the greatest album of the year.  I may not agree with that yet, but I like it more and more each time I hear it.  Kind of like when Jessica Alba calls me in the middle of the night and says "I can't live without your sex, Zach."  It sounds better every time.  Just like that.

A week of concerts

Monday Mar 26, 2007

This week I'll be going to both Bloc Party (Tuesday) and OK GO/Snow Patrol (Friday) concerts.

I have to admit that I'm not as into Bloc Party's second album, A Weekend In The City, as I was into Silent Alarm.  The overall feeling of the album is much heavier and darker and while it maintains a lot of the energy of their first album, I don't feel that this album will be as timeless or will be on as heavy rotation in my iTunes as its predecessor.  Having said that, I think there are a few excellent songs on the album like "Sunday," Uniform," "Kreuzburg," and "I Still Remember," which I'm attaching.
Enjoy,

My friend introduced me to this song back in October and I've been listening to it on and off ever since.  Even though DJ Shadow's last album is pretty mediocre compared to his insanely good earlier stuff, "Backstage Girl" stands out on The Outsider.  Phonte Coleman's lyrics are outstanding: the MySpace reference gets me every time.  If I had to pigeonhole this song, I would say that its somewhere between Mos Def on a really good day and the greatest stripper song of all time.  Actually, its probably closer to the latter.

Not so new, but still good

I've liked Black Rebel Motorcycle Club since I saw them open for Oasis at Finsbury Park, London in 2002.  They've always had a darker, grittier sound to them that could only come from a British band, but their last album Howl had a huge Southern Rock feel to it.  This song, "The Weight Of the World," is one of my favorites from that album.

If you want another great song from this album, get "Shuffle Your Feet."

I haven't been able to stop listening to this song for the last two weeks.  I really like the trippy guitar and horns.  Check this song out, I'm sure you'll like it.

The beginning of Reading Week

I've listened to Come On, Feel the Illinoise! no less than 10 times in the past few days, simply because its one of the best albums I own.  Sufjan Stevens is way too eclectic to become repetitive, and if you haven't listened to this album yet I seriously suggest you do so.
I wanted to post "Decatur, Or, A Round of Applause For Your Stepmother!" but this podcast thing is ghetto as all hell and its not accepting the format.  So, I'm posting "Chicago," which is just as good in reality.  If you've seen Little Miss Sunshine, you'll remember it from the soundtrack.  Its a really uplifting song, very orchestral and easy to listen to.
Enjoy,

Valentine's Day is really a shitty holiday if you think about it.  If anything, its serves to remind your lover of your romantic inadequacy on a completely arbitrary day (outside of religion, but let's be honest, do you even know who St. Valentin is?) that holds no sentimentality to the couple.  But I won't bash you if you want to boost Lindt's and Hallmark's profits.  Instead, I'll make my first post to this podcast thing a wicked romantic song that easily makes my top ten favorite songs of all time.  And then, I'll post what I want for Valentine's Day.
Love,
Z
